DISCRETION I kings 21:1-15

Discretion means the quality of making a sound, prudent and tactful judgement. It also means making a rightful decision that is not injurious and insulting to others especially in a world we are free to make any decision. Shakespeare postulates that only a fool thread where Angels are afraid to go. As a discreet Child of God not everything we can say we must say and not everything we can do we must do. One of the oldest Apostle, Jude said that even angels of God still honours Satan and they never say ill of Satan or to curse, Jude 1:8.

We the young ministers these days are guilty of this as we talk to elders anyhow under the guise that we carry equal grace or that we are even more educated than they are. We just open our mouth and say anything that comes from our months. This indiscreet and unguarded act has killed many ministers physically morally and spiritually.

In military, a new recruit personnel may have a rank than some people he/she met in the base but that doesn’t mean somehow the exalted officer won’t stylishly be given a crypt-compliment to those officers he met on ground. In the same vein, young, baby and new convert has a way they should address the fathers.

Naboth made a very right statement but offered in a rude manner. Many preachers had faulted Ahab’s action, but it seems nobody has ever examined how Naboth missed it. By every claim of ownership in 1 Samuel 8:10-18, Ahab has every right to take over Naboth’s without even requesting for it; also, the farmland is close to Ahab’s palace and could serve as Breach of Security to the palace. Ahab had politely request for the land with benefits attached for Naboth. In fact, Ahab was not bothered much except for the manners by which Naboth has responded to the King’s request. Naboth would have had his life spared if he had answered the king discreetly; “‘O’ Dear King, selling the land to you will be a pleasure, but kindly allow me to think about it”. In the process of thinking about it, some chiefs in the land would have heard about it, even older people that king honour their words and if it is not good to sell the property, they would have been the one to directly consult the king over the matter. LET’S LEARN TO BE DISCREET!!!
